Norfolk Heritage Glass

$22.00

These pieces are handcrafted by nature, showing different stages of evolution. Some have inclusions that can go as far back as the meteor hit along the Chesapeake Bay millions of years ago, through the revolutionary and civil war, into prohibition era and beyond. you’ll see remnants of bones in some, sand glass mixed with man made glass due to explosions from wars or the great meteor hit, one of the several fires Norfolk has undergone throughout the years. bottles melted in some of these fires from the prohibition era. These pieces are history, showing different stages of evolution throughout the east coast of the United States. Many of these pieces were beginning to pseudomorph as mineral deposits and coral began growing over them and many have inclusions of precious metals, mainly gold, some copper and some silver. Truly unique and a heritage to the many stages of colonization and evolution of Norfolk, Virginia.

This piece is interesting as it looks like a hot glob of glass rolled over or splatted on a piece of bark before the bark fired causing the barks layers to show on the glass. Of course that is just my perspective. Considering how old this glass is and how I wasn’t around for the event, that’s all I got. This piece is so light that I would guess it to be obsidian from the volcanic era of the east coast. Malachite and other mineral growth has started to form along the surface. Like others, this piece fluoresces an array of colors in long wave UV light.

size: 2”w x 1-1/2”h x 1/2” d
